You know things are slow in the press room when Don Imus is the top story for three days.

Let me recap, for any of you too bored to keep up with this story.

Don Imus said some racist, definitely ill considered, disastrously unfunny comments on his radio show.

Here’s what he said:

“Man, they got tattoos,” referring the Rutgers Women’s Basketball team, “That’s some nappy-headed hos there, I’m going to tell you that now.”

People everywhere became instantly enraged.

And I mean EVERYWHERE. Which is fine. If the concerned parties think that’s racist enough to crucify Don Imus over it, I say go ahead, whatever. My point is this:

WHO GIVES A SHIT ABOUT WHAT DON IMUS THINKS?

First off, most of the country has never even heard of him. The coverage seems wildly out of proportion to his prominence. Second, he’s one of these obnoxious shock jock assholes. This is their shtick. They say outrageous and inflammatory bull crap to get attention. Giving him the attention he craves just encourages him. Imus has gotten more exposure in the last four days than he has in his whole life. He will survive, in some form or another, and in the long run this flap will only have served to turn him into a far more prominent national media figure. Remember the Opie and Anthony thing? They were back on the air in like, 10 minutes.

Now to be clear, Don Imus made some totally stupid, insensitive, racist, remarks. I’m simply saying that such behavior is what Imus gets PAID for. It’s why I don’t listen to crap like that. It’s asinine on its face. Indulging it only grants Imus credibility he’s not entitled to. None of these Howard Stern wannabes are to be taken seriously. It’s like arguing politics with a child. Sure you can win, but it’s a hollow victory.

Also, the hype over the whole thing seems a little transparent. It’s like the media is just killing time waiting for the Anna Nicole Paternity announcement. We’ll see I guess.
