JULY 4TH
By Benjamin Phillips
Tomorrow, July 4th, is the 40th anniversary of the Freedom of Information Act. Former President Jimmy Carter wrote a great article for the occasion. Check it out here: We Need Fewer Secrets
No post tomorrow due to the liberation of our lands from King George back in 1777. Well, not the land I’m on specifically. Really just the land constituting the thirteen colonies. I’m in Illinois, so I guess I’m just celebrating my Independence from the Indians.
Actually, now that I think about it, Illinois had been ceded to Britain by the French in the Treaty of Paris at the conclusion of the French and Indian war 1763, so it was British in 1777. It didn’t become part of America until George Rogers Clark defeated the British at Kaskaskia, securing the territory for the state of Virginia in 1778. I’m not sure that anything happened in Illinois on July 4th 1777. Huh.
Anyway, I’m not writing anything tomorrow.
