As if I needed another reason not to like David Hasselhoff, today I read this:

REMINDER: JOHN MCCAIN IS A CONSERVATIVE
There are a lot of Democrats who go all weak kneed over John McCain. They see him as a Maverick, straight shooting, conscience driven Democrat-in-Republican-clothing. Many blue staters would cross the aisle and vote for McCain if he ran for president, mainly due to the fact that he occasionally takes very well publicized but not ultimately all that meaningful stands against the Bush administration. Like when he came out against torture. Sure. He’s anti-torture. Kind of a no brainier. NOBODY acting out of anything but anger is pro-torture. It’s a really safe stand to take. John McCain’s been around forever, was himself tortured, and he is practically immune to Bush administration retribution, so can take on torture safely and establish this “Republican you can trust” sort of persona for himself.
I don’t buy it. I have never really been on the John McCain bandwagon. I believe that if he wanted to be a Liberal, he would be one, and I view his middle of the road posturing as little more than slick political maneuvering. He plays the moderate because he knows people eat it up. The problem is that Bush is so crazy, such an off the charts Lex Luthor style poster boy of villainy, so cartoonishly nasty, that a normal conservative Republican like John McCain seems like a centrist. This allows him, much like Pepé Le Pew, to hide his Republican white stripe whenever possible, and a lot of the naive and jittery kitty-cats on the left fall for it. Just because your boyfriend doesn’t hit you, doesn’t mean he’s a nice guy.
Take this for example. As I noted Monday, South Dakota passed a bill banning abortion in most cases. It was a great victory for the frothing neo-cons. But, according to a spokesman for John McCain, he: ”would have signed the legislation.” Does that sound moderate to you? Even Rudy Giuliani is Pro-life, and he’s awful.
So watch out. Yes. He’s a straight shooter. I’m just not sure who he’s shooting at.
